April 26, 2011: Day 1, Trip to the South of Ireland: Powerscourt

Here we go! The first leg of our trip. Olivia did all the driving. Yes, they do have some freeways in Ireland--they are called "motorways" and they have a toll to use, about 1.80 euros. Keep in mind, the steering wheel is on the wrong side, and driving is on the left.

We seem to be thrilled, right?!? Erica hid altogether.
Our first stop--Powerscourt House and Gardens. For you movie fans, the exteriors of "The Count of Monte Cristo" (starring Jim Caviezel) was filmed here. The gardens here are fabulous!
Date: 1875

 Erica hammin' it up!

Here's the back of the house, the scene you may recall from the movie (without my lovely girls, of course)
One of the many fountains at Powerscourt, Triton Fountain, with Pegasus (pegasi? pegasuses?)
Duck (ya think?)
The photos here cannot adequately express the colors of this beautiful garden. But, here is an attempt.

A bridge in the Japanese Garden

Pepperpot Tower, in the gardens. Not sure what it was for, but it was designed following an actual pepperpot, I guess.

Note: these are headstones for pets. They had a pet cemetery! Most of the graves were for dogs. I took a few of the unusual ones--this one had two cows! There were also horses and ponies.
